Calamity Impact as
perceived through interaction with NGOs at Nagapattinam:
a) The calamity has washed away many fishermen villages
b) The total causality number is increasing and some reports place the
deaths at 10,000 in this district alone
c) The sea water has entered town of Velankanni, Nagaipattinam and Nagoor.
Due to this the towns are evacuated and people moving to other towns nearby
d) Estimated victims in relief camps: about 1 lakh (comprising of 25000
families)
e) Mass burial of the dead bodies continues
f) The victims are accommodated in marriage halls, schools, temples, government
buildings, etc.,
Death tolls: A lot
of dead bodies have to be recovered from the coastal areas. As a result
the death number may increase further, some people even place the number
at 20,000. The official break up for the death toll is placed at 3000+
and the survey is being initiated.
Area Coverage: A network
of NGOs has been formed with 13 NGOs located here and will be coordinating
the efforts for the entire relief work in Nagapattinam District. About
73 relief camp sites have been identified to carry out work. This network
almost covers all the camp sites.
Economical Devastation:
Since its being the coastal area, the fishermen community is the most
affected lot. The indicative figures are as follows
a) Roughly about 10000 boats / Kattumaram were destroyed or lost
b) Approximately 50000 fishing nets were damaged beyond repair and lost
c) Minimum of 30000 huts / houses were washed away or demolished
A detailed survey on economical devastation is being carried out.
