The Relief provided
to the students after Tsunami:
· Government has provided text books and notebooks and uniform
(Textbooks for Class 8 still required)
· Sneha-has provided casual clothes.
The current Problems:
The attendance levels in the school has been very low ever sine 26th December's
events.
The children as well as the parents are apprehensive about the proximity
of the school campus to the sea. This has resulted in many of the parents
requesting the headmaster for Transfer Certificates. But, a few villagers
are of the opinion that this trend is not just because of the safety concerns,
but also because of the low standards of the teaching staff. The school
has been recognised as a "Middle school" only recently and it
has to have some minimum strength for the same.
Some Possible solutions:
Even if the building is not in very bad shape it is still very close to
the sea. It is not known whether this school is nearer than regulations
allow, but the government orders clearly states that such structures will
be removed soon. Hence it is very essential that the school premises be
shifted to a different location at the earliest. If some land can be identified
within the village itself, arrangements for an immediate school shelter
can be made. It seems like this solution would find favour with most of
the parents.
Teachers and standards of teaching is also an area to be looked into.
Since most of the children still have the fear of the sea in them, this
could be an ideal opportunity for setting up a child activity centre to
help the students overcome the fear and return to normalcy. Older students
and youth from the village itself can be identified for this sort of counseling,
support and other extra-curricular activities.
