A workshop to address issues on rural community managed supply chains accessing markets through networking, standardisation, and common identity creation

As part of Samanvaya's association with CCD, Madurai, we have been involved with the latter's rural marketing supply chain initiative that aims to provide better returns for dry land farmers and also reach quality food to the rural consumers through a network called Aaharam. This programme is being piloted on a trial basis in 3 rural districts around Madurai.

Since February this year (2006), Samanvaya has been involved in conceptualising a larger network across peninsular India to upscale and expand the Aaharam network. "Market Access" held in Bangalore on 10th and 11th of April 2006, is a major step in this direction. A definite road map has been drawn as an outcome of this meeting. Two groups have been formed, that will work independently on (1) setting up of a marketing network as a profitable business venture, and (2) creating a trademark label and standards that would be easy to adapt and comply with for farmers pursuing organic agriculture in dry land areas. This initiative is anchored by CCD and coordinated at CCD by Mr. Utkarsh. Ramasubramanian, Chief, Samanvaya will manage the communication for this initiative.

Samanvaya's involvement with the organic farming movement and initiatives in this sector, has been consistent and continuous since the organisation's initial days as consultants with CIKS (Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems), Chennai. During this period Samanvaya team facilitated the launch of - Arogyam, an organic consumer network that has since then become a brand.

Samanvaya has been supporting organic food marketing initiatives in Chennai city for ventures including AuroAnnam, NatureAgros and currently Organic Harvest. Samanvaya also started and managed a portal, (the first of its kind when it came), chennaiorganicfood.com, for providing relevant information to the Chennai consumer on the availability of organic food in the city.
